machupicchu

DAY TOUR

Machupicchu, the lost city of the Inkas, is where the last emperors, priests and priestesses took refuge and where the empire survived for 40 years after the arrival of the Spaniards. This secret and mysterious citadel was presumably designed by the emperor Pachacutec Inca Yupanqui (IX-Inca`s Dynasty). It is spectacularly nestled between dramatic mountains at 2400masl, and was built around 1450.

Amazingly, the citadel was never discovered by the Spaniards, and it remained a secret city for everyone but locals until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911. Macchu Picchu has over the latter years been restored to display the amazing layout of agricultural terraces, homes, temples and plazas. In 1983, UNESCO designated Machu Picchu a World Heritage Site, describing it as "an absolute masterpiece of architecture and a unique testimony to the Inca civilization"
